Making a yoga bag - the tube and flat felled seam

Today, in part 4 of 7, we're rolling the body of the yoga bag into tube and stitching it together with a flat felled seam. You don't have to use a flat felled seam. I did my first couple of bags with a French seam. You can also sew a regular seam or finish the edges with a serger. Although I really like the flat felled seam, making it on this long tube is a bit awkward (as you'll see below).

I learned how to do a flat felled seam from this tutorial. You can do it that way too, but I decided to avoid the cutting step by attaching the edges together with 3/8" between them (hopefully the picture will explain better).

So, here goes:
  • Bring together the edges of the bag, right sides facing, ensuring that the trim or the top of the pocket lines up
  • Place one edge 3/8" away from the other edge
  • Pin
  • Pin along the length of the bag

  • Stitch with 5/8" seam allowance
  • Turn the bag right side out just to peek and see if things are aligned how you want them to be (if not, now is the time to unpick and re-do the seam)
  • Turn the bag inside out again and press the seam closed with the wider edge on top of the narrower one
  • Fold the wide edge down and tuck it under the narrow edge and press
  • Pin along the length of the bag

  • Stitch 1/8" from the folded edge along the length of the bag
  • As you go along, the bag is going to bunch around the presser foot and you'll have to carefully ensure that folds of fabric don't get caught in the stitching
  • The new seam is the pink one on the bottom, near the fold

  • Turn the bag right side out and stitch 1/8" from the folded edge
  • Stitch along the length of the bag carefully ensuring that folds of fabric don't get caught and stitched along with the seam
  • The new seam runs horizontally just above the fold

This is what the outside of the bag looks like now. Next step, attach the drawstring closure.
