Today, in part 6 of 7, we're attaching the strap onto the bag and putting on the round bottom. We're going to attach the round bottom so that the raw edges are hidden and we get clean finishes from the inside and outside.
Attaching the bottom of the strap
Making guidelines to attach the round bottom
Attaching the round bottom
Attaching the top of the strap
Attaching the bottom of the strap
- Pin the strap to the outside of the bottom of the bag so that it's centred over the flat felled seam
- Stitch with 1/4" seam allowance
Making guidelines to attach the round bottom
- Fold the bag in half lengthwise and press at the bottom edge of the bag to make 4 creases that mark the bag into quarters
- Fold each circle in half and press and fold again and press so that each circle is divided into quarters
- Stitch around the bottom of the bag with 1/2" seam allowance and make 1/2" slits along the bottom of the bag, 1/2" apart, being careful not to cut into the stitching
Attaching the round bottom
- Turn the bag inside out and pin the circle onto the bag, right sides facing, aligning the creases and edges on the bag and the circle
- Stitch the circle onto the bag with 1/2" seam allowance
- Pin the right side of the other circle to the wrong side of the bag, sandwiching the bag between the two circles (you should be able to pin at least 3/4 of the way around the bag)
- Using 1/2" seam allowance, stitch as much of the circle as possible onto the bag
- Turn the circles right side out
- Close the gap with hand stitching
Attaching the top of the strap
- Put a yoga mat into the bag and mark the point where you'd like to attach the top of the strap (I marked the spot with a pin), remove the yoga mat from bag
- Fold the top of the strap 1" and pin it to the bag
- Stitch the strap down so that the raw edge is folded underneath the part you're stitching down
